Choosing the Right ATV/UTV

ATVs and UTVs can be great sources of entertainment, as well as useful utility vehicles. While both may be used for some similar applications, they are usually used for very different purposes. If you are looking for a fast and nimble vehicle to ride for entertainment, you will probably want to consider buying an ATV; whereas if you are looking for a powerful and convenient vehicle to use for hauling and transportation, you will want to consider a UTV. For a more in depth article detailing reasons for choosing either an ATV or a UTV, check out Popular Mechanics’ article ATV vs. UTV: What Vehicle To Use WhenOnce you have a general idea of which type of vehicle you want to buy, we have compiled some helpful information for choosing a specific model ATV or UTV.

When choosing an ATV or UTV, it is important to know who will be riding it as well as where and for what purpose they will be riding it. In order to evaluate based upon those three criteria, we have compiled a brief list of questions below to make deciding on a certain model much easier.

  • How do you plan on using your ATV/UTV? (Trail riding, hunting, racing, farming, utility work)
  • Do you plan on hauling anything or pulling a trailer with your ATV/UTV?
  • How old is the primary rider of the ATV/UTV?
  • How much experience does the primary rider of ATV/UTV have?
  • How many people do you want to be able to transport/have ride with you?
  • What sort of terrain do you plan on riding on?
  • Do you want an automatic or manual transmission?
  • What is your budget?

I agree that thinking about who will be using the UTV as well as their purpose for using the UTV is important in figuring out what type you’re going to get. You also mention knowing what type of terrain you’ll be driving over. I think it’s important to know if you’re UTV will be able to accommodate a plow on it, especially if you are living in an area that snows.

Excatly! It’s always good to analyze the terrain that you are planning on riding on, as well as any attachments you may think you would like to utilize! Thanks for the comment!

I agree that you need to consider what you plan to use your UTV for before you choose one. Along with this, I would imagine that you would need to consider how you will transport it. I’m looking for a UTV for hunting so when I buy one I’ll have to find a trailer to tow it in as well.

      Good Day Olivia,

That is a very valid point! Depending on the size of the UTV and any other needs you may have, trailer choices can be a little daunting. I’ll have to include some information related to this in a future blog.

      Thank you,

      Cole

I do like that you remind people to consider their budget before they buy a UTV. After all, the kind of UTV they buy is wholly determined by how much money they have. For example, if you need something a little cheaper, then you might consider a used vehicle.

Thanks for your insight, Kyle! You are certainly correct in the sense that an older used 4×4 truck could be more cost efficient than a UTV. Thank you for reading!

I’m glad that you talked about a few questions to help you decide on an ATV for sale that would be best for me. We’re looking for an ATV for sale that we can take trail riding, and use all through the mountains when we’re camping, so I really liked your question about the terrain. Hopefully that will help us narrow it down to a couple ATV’s , and we can see what the best option for us would be!

Thank you for the tips on choosing the right ATV or UTV, and what to consider before buying one. Personally I think that it’s important to figure out what the ATV is going to be used for before purchasing, in order to avoid overworking one made for recreational purposes. I will remember to refer back to this whenever I’m in the market for an ATV.

Thanks for the comment Thomas! You are absolutely correct that you need to determine what you’ll be using the machine for so that you aren’t overworking it! Have a great day!

I agree that you need to know the use of your ATV before you buy one. I would imagine that you would want to find different vehicles for different activities. My brother loves to go ATV hunting, so he’ll have to get one specifically for that.

My husband and I are thinking about getting an ATV to use when we go camping. We want to make sure we choose the right one that will be functional, fun, and fit within our budget. Like you said, we will also have to consider whether we want an automatic or manual transmission. Thanks for sharing these questions!

That’s very true Annika! Good luck on your purchase! Thanks for reading and for commenting!

I like how you say that you would want to consider how you will use your ATV before you hire them. It would make sense to find one that is going to accommodate your needs as well. My sister is looking for an ATV, so she’ll have to consider the uses first.
